I had Italian classes 2 times a week for 2 months earlier this year. And it's really paying off now. The experience of traveling when you know the local language is way way WAY better.
The simple fact of approaching somebody to ask for information in THEIR language, using the names that THEY know, makes it much easier to get all the necessary information.
And I'm pretty sure this is one of the factors I've been treated so well so far. Even though I don't know how to speak properly, simply acknowledging the local culture and using the standards for Thank you and Please, along with a big genuine smile take you very far.
I remember a story from a friend of mine when he told me the Italians are too stupid because when he was in Rome he asked where was the "Coliseum" and nobody would answer. Now if only he took the time to learn the name in Italian "Colosseo", I bet $100 that he would get a much better response. I know they look alike when written down but the pronunciation is completely different.
And learning Italian is also helping me understand better the Italian way of living. Chaotic and intense.
Now off course my Italian last name betrays me as many will point out that coming up in an Italian family eating Polenta every day will give me an edge. I must agree. But the language helps even more because you cannot learn the language without the culture. And once you learn the culture then you UNDERSTAND instead of JUDGING.
Unfortunately you cannot learn all the languages of the world, so you do as much as possible.

Eu fiz 2 meses de aulas de Italiano 2 vezes por semana no começo deste ano. E agora está realmente retornando o investimento. A experiência de viajar quando você conhece o idioma local é muito, mas muito, mas MUITO melhor.
O simples fato de poder pedir informação para alguém na língua DELES, usando os nomes que ELES conhecem, deixa a vida muito fácil e você recebe muito mais informação.
Eu tenho certeza que este é um dos fatores porque fomos tão bem tratados até agora. Mesmo que eu fale Italiano macarrônico, cheio de erros, simplesmente reconhecer a cultura local e usar as frases máginas como Por Favor e Obrigado, juntamente com um sorriso verdadeiro vão te levar muito mais longe.
Eu lembro a história que um amigo meu me contou tempo atrás, sobre como ele achava os italianos estúpidos, pois ele pedia onde era o "Coliseu", e os caras não entendiam. Se ele tivesse tirado 20 segundos para aprender o nome em Italiano, eu tenho certeza que teria tido resultados muito diferentes. Apesar que as palavras são escritas de forma semelhante, a pronúncia é muito diferente.
E aprender Italiano também está me ajudando a entender melhor o jeito de viver dos italianos. Caótico e intenso.
Agora obviamente que meu sobrenome italiano me ajuda um note, já que vários vão dizer que o fato de comer polenta todo dia desde o berço é uma boa vantagem. Eu devo concordar. Mas o idioma ajuda a entender a cultura melhor ainda, pois é impossível aprender o idioma sem a cultura. E quando você aprende melhor a cultura você começa a ENTENDER e para de JULGAR.
Infelizmente não é possível aprender todas as línguas do mundo, então a gente faz o que é possível.
